Getting Out of Town

GETTING OUT OF TOWN - ALTERNATIVE WINTER BREAKS

If the idea of staying local is filling you with a fun-shaped void then there are plenty of ways to get away from it all. Our alternative pick of things to do this winter is exactly what you need right now.

Sometimes the inspiration doesn’t come in time and before you know it, it’s Christmas Day already. You know what you didn’t want to do this year but you’d gorged on too many supermarket Xmas sandwiches to think clearly about it. Perhaps you didn’t want to be in the country at all! Well, to get in there before it’s too late, we have some last minute alternative ideas for this winter.

On top of that we throw in some style ideas, so whatever you decide to do you’re looking your best.

A PLACE IN THE COUNTRY

The Pig Hotel
Brockenhurst, Hampshire

This is how to escape the city in style. If you’re after a touch of country living then this is the one. The Pig Hotel is a thirty bedroom country house that boasts countryside, spa treatments and ridiculously good food. A bit like us, it does old English charm in a modern way. Book in to the forest cabin for the full experience.

HEAD TO THE SEASIDE

Brighton
South Coast, East Sussex

The prospect of facing the wind and rain on a British beach isn’t the most appealing but it depends where you go. We suggest Brighton. As a year round seaside town it fits the bill; great buzz, good food and plenty of coffee shops and pubs to warm up in. If you’re around Christmas Day there’s a tradition of swimming in the sea.

EMBRACE THE WILDERNESS

Dryad Bushcraft Training
Gower Peninsula, Wales

If it’s a wilderness escape you’re after, then go for this one. Channel your primal inner woodsman and take on bushcraft in the South Wales countryside for a few days. Learn everything from flint knapping to learning how to hunt with a catapult. Definitely more interesting than watching the local Xmas lights get switched on.

THE ALTERNATIVE CITY BREAK

Ljubljana
Slovenia

You might think I’ve accidentally leant on my keyboard, but I haven’t; Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and its being dubbed the new Berlin. So, now might be the time to go. There’s a burgeoning arts scene, great nightlife and a recently developed riverside area. There’s also a massive castle. We probably prefer Ljubljana to Lapland for a winter getaway.
