With the start of a new year, we all ask what we can do better in the year ahead. “Travelling more” is always at the top of any New Year’s bucket list, and we want to help you make sure if this is the resolution for you, you travel wisely.

While many Brits will flock to the many incredible resorts Spain has to offer this year - or potentially it’s two leading cities, Barcelona and Madrid - one city and its surrounding region is often overlooked when considering a Spanish break.

Bilbao, in the heart of Spain’s Basque region close to the French border, offers everything a traveller could want. Some of the best restaurants in the world, beautiful beaches, incredible nightlife, Bilbao and the surrounding area is easily reached via most major British airports, and makes for an unforgettable trip.

Italy is another favourite European destination, and we offer another alternative to the usual in the form of the Amalfi Coast. The Bay of Naples offers some of the most picturesque coastal landscapes on the planet, combined with the finest Italian cuisine that we all know and love.

The Amalfi Coast’s main destinations - Sorrento, Capri, Positano, Amalfi itself, to name but a few - are places to revel in the simpler things. The warm, humid climate means the quality of the region’s produce is second to none. You haven’t tasted a simple tomato or lemon until you’ve tasted those grown on this Italian outpost.

A curveball choice perhaps, but Estonia is the European city you want to visit before everyone finds out about it. With superb views of the Baltic Sea, an incredible street food scene and incredible value accomodation and attractions, Tallinn is one of Eastern Europe’s oldest cities but is yet to suffer from the strains of mass tourism.

Japan is fast emerging as the go-to, big ticket travel destination for Brits, and it’s our top long haul destination for the year. While Kyoto and Osaka are always incredible options, we also suggest one further destination in the form of the Kii Peninsula.

Easily accessible from its more famous neighbouring cities, the Kii Peninsula offers a plethora of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, breathtaking scenery and traditional experiences without the crowds. Get there before it’s too late.

Often overlooked in favour of Sydney and Melbourne, Canberra is both Australia’s capital, and best kept secret. This small city is perfect to wander and get lost in, with almost every neighbourhood full of life, activity and gastronomic delights.

More than worth the long-haul flight, Canberra is full of historic sites, incredible museums and picturesque views, and is a great way to experience an alternative Australia.
