Despite its concrete jungle first impressions, London has some of the best rooftop spaces and beer gardens in the world; an escape from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. Some, thankfully, embrace the elements all year round. An open air pint in the middle of November may sound cold and unappealing, but hear us out.
Given the fragility and short-lived nature of the great British summer, drinking establishments have stepped up their weather-proofing game; adding designer heaters, winter wigwams and sheltered seating. There are a few more we could add to our shortlist, but we didn’t want to give you repetitive strain from thumb scrolling and link-clicking. So, if you’re heading in to the city for a drink or two this winter, here are a few places to consider.
We kick off with The Boundary in East London, a converted Victorian warehouse that’s open all year. The rooftop bar and grill has a weatherproof pergola for when it’s raining, as well as extensive outside seating. Keep warm by sitting next to one of the designer heaters. Whatever the weather, you’ll have great views to go with your drink.
A few minutes walk from the river, at the heart of London’s Borough Market is the Wheatsheaf; a traditional little pub with a great buzz. The heated winter garden has a campervan bar, so you’re never too far from your next drink. Award winning ales, craft beers and good food; it’s simple but what more do you need?
The Water Poet boasts a large, lively beer garden with a good amount of seating; crucially it’s heated and sheltered from the elements. As well as the occasional hog roast, it also offers high quality pub grub made with locally sourced, seasonal produce. Like any discerning East London boozer these days, the craft ale options are great.

QUEEN OF HOXTON WINTER WIGWAM, SHOREDITCH Nearest tube stop: Liverpool Street Nearest train station: Shoreditch high street Queen of Hoxton rooftop bar is already a well-known hang out, a little obvious you might think. However, every winter sees this iconic spot transformed for the worsening weather. Inspired by The Brothers Grimm fairy tale, their winter wigwam offers hot cocktails, amazing food and a gingerbread house-inspired bar.
